Acoustic foam is vital for any room in which music is to be recorded, rehearsed, mixed or edited. In a control room the room has to be free of distortion so that the signal can be judged accurately. So the main areas around the mixing desk make up the most coverage of bass traps and acoustic tiles.  Acoustic foam may also be require don the rear wall depending on how short the room is.

In a live room the sound waves in the room must be controled but be natural so some relfections are still desired in the room.  Usually a live room calls for between 20 and 40% coverage of acoustic foam and this will involve the installation of both bass trapping and acoustic tiles.  In a live room the use of the room can some times vary greatly in terms of the genre of music that is being recorded or rehearsed so effective acoustic tiles and bass traps are a must to acheive the best results.

In a vocal booth acoustic tiles are the only requirement.  The amount of coverage in vocal booth bepends greatly on how 'dead' the space needs to be.  So if a vocal booth's recordings are to be used in music then about 50% coverage of acoustic foam is required.  If the vocal booth is being used for voice overs then the acoustic tiles need a heavier coverage for a tighter recordings.  Never will 100% acoustic tiles be required in a vocal booth or any room for that matter.  Some relfective surfaces will always be required in a room.   Without reflective surfaces the recordings will sound very unnatural and claustrophoebic and during mix downs reverb will need to be added to give the recordings air to make them sound natural.

A room without any acoustic treatment will be very reflective. If there are no surfaces in the room where sound waves are being absorbed then the results of the recordings will be out of control. By installing acoustic foam the 'liveness' of the room can be brought under control and the response of the room can improved. Use of acoustic treatment is the only way you can tell if what you are recording, editing, mixing or monitoring is accurate as well as not negatively affected by the room you are in. Acoustic Treatment gives you the added ability to record and monitor accurately. Whether you want the room live or dead, acoustic treatment is the only way to tame the beast that is your room and keep it under control.

Acoustic tiles are not the end of the story. The acoustic tiles will absorb the mid and top end of the frequency range and while acoustic tiles make up the biggest coverage of acoustic foam in the room you also need to treat the low end frequency. Low end frequencies are stronger and longer than mid and high end frequencies and so it takes more mass to absorb these stronger frequencies. The only way to effectively treat low end frequencies is with the installation of effective bass traps. The most common placement for bass traps is the corners. This is because low end frequencies tend to congregate in the corners. Sound can be 6-12dB louder in a corner than in any part of a room and this is why we insist on the installation of bass traps in the corners. The wider the bass traps the lower they can absorb to. Standard bass traps are usually 12" wide but these bass traps can't absorb the very low frequencies. This is why we introduced the MAXXX Bass Trap. This has a width of 24" creating a larger area for the low and very low frequencies to be trapped.

So we have acoustic tiles, bass traps, isolation equipment and installation tools.  Basically we have every form of acoustic foam you need to be able to effectively treat your room no matter what your budget is, great or small.  Plus if you ever need help in deciding what acosutic foam you require we are only a click away via email: enquiries@advancedacoustics-uk.com.
