Reduce Everyday Airborne Noise and Footfall Through Timber Floors

Our Essential Timber Floor Soundproofing System – Carpet is a practical, DIY-friendly solution for improving sound insulation through timber floors, helping reduce everyday airborne noise (talking, TV) as well as impact noise from footfall. Using two layers of 5kg MLV combined with Silent Floor Ultra Acoustic Underlay, this system provides an effective upgrade with a slim overall build-up.

To make things easier, our online calculator works out the quantities required for your project, with an additional 5% already allowed for waste.

A Slim, Effective Timber Floor Upgrade for Carpeted Rooms

This Essential system is designed for timber floor constructions where you want a straightforward improvement in both airborne noise reduction (voices, general household noise) and impact noise reduction (footfall and general vibration through the floor).

The build-up consists of:

  • 2 layers of 5kg MLV (Soundproofing Mat), joints staggered
  • Silent Floor Ultra Acoustic Underlay
  • Everbuild AC95 Acoustic Sealant
  • PVC Jointing Tape
  • High Strength Contact Adhesive

The finished build-up is approximately 16mm overall, excluding the carpet finish.

Important Supply Information

All components required for this system are supplied by us as part of the calculator output. You do not need to source additional system materials separately.

How the System Works

This system improves floor sound insulation by combining mass and impact isolation:

  • Two layers of 5kg MLV add dense mass to help reduce airborne sound transmission, with staggered joints to minimise sound leakage at seams
  • Silent Floor Ultra Acoustic Underlay reduces impact noise from footfall and improves overall acoustic comfort under carpet
  • AC95 Acoustic Sealant seals perimeter gaps and weak points to maintain airtightness
  • Jointing Tape seals MLV joints to prevent sound leakage at seams

What We Supply

The system calculator works out the estimated quantities required for all soundproofing materials we supply, including:

  • 5kg MLV (Soundproofing Mat) — 2 layers
  • Silent Floor Ultra Acoustic Underlay
  • High Strength Contact Adhesive
  • AC95 Acoustic Sealant
  • PVC Jointing Tape

We also include an additional 5% allowance for waste in the calculated quantities.

Key Benefits

  • Practical entry-level upgrade for everyday noise and footfall — two layers of 5kg MLV combined with Silent Floor Ultra Underlay provide a meaningful improvement in both airborne and impact noise without structural work
  • Dual 5kg MLV layers for added mass — two rolls of 5kg mass loaded vinyl with staggered joints add dense mass to help reduce everyday airborne noise including talking, TV, and general household noise
  • Silent Floor Ultra Acoustic Underlay for impact isolation — installed above the MLV layers to reduce footfall and impact noise, and to provide a high-performance acoustic substrate directly under the carpet
  • Suitable for carpet finishes — Silent Floor Ultra provides a compatible acoustic base for carpet installations without requiring adhesive bonding to the floor finish
  • DIY-friendly installation — no structural work required; the system is laid over the existing floorboards and finished with carpet as normal
  • Slim build-up depth — approximately 16mm overall, making it suitable for most rooms; check door and threshold clearances before ordering
  • Built-in 5% waste allowance — calculator quantities include a 5% overage to reduce the risk of under-ordering on site

Important Notes

  • This system is designed for timber floors intended to be finished with carpet
  • It is intended to improve both airborne noise and impact noise, but results will vary depending on the existing floor construction
  • Sealant quantities are an approximation only and should be treated as a guide
  • The calculator is provided as a guide only, and final quantities should always be checked before ordering

Installation Summary

Installation involves:

  1. Preparing the floor surface so it is clean, dry, and free from debris
  2. Installing the first layer of 5kg MLV
  3. Installing the second layer of 5kg MLV, staggering joints where possible
  4. Sealing joints as required and applying Jointing Tape
  5. Sealing perimeter gaps with AC95 Acoustic Sealant where required
  6. Installing Silent Floor Ultra Underlay ready for carpet fitting
