Reduce Everyday Airborne Noise and Footfall Through Timber Floors

Our Essential Timber Floor Soundproofing System – Loose Lay LVT or Laminate is a slim, practical solution for improving sound insulation through timber floors, helping reduce everyday airborne noise (talking, TV) as well as impact noise from footfall. Using two layers of 5kg MLV combined with 3mm Terrac Rubber Underlay, this system is designed for loose lay LVT and laminate-style floating floor finishes.

To make things easier, our online calculator works out the quantities required for your project, with an additional 5% already allowed for waste.

A Slim Timber Floor Upgrade for Floating / Loose Lay Finishes

This Essential system is designed for timber floor constructions where you want a straightforward improvement in both airborne noise reduction (voices, general household noise) and impact noise reduction (footfall and general vibration through the floor). This system is intended for use where the final floor finish will be loose lay LVT or a laminate/floating floor type installation.

The build-up consists of:

  • 2 layers of 5kg MLV (Soundproofing Mat), joints staggered
  • 3mm Terrac Rubber Underlay
  • Everbuild AC95 Acoustic Sealant
  • PVC Jointing Tape
  • High Strength Contact Adhesive

The finished build-up is approximately 10mm overall.

Important Supply Information

All components required for this system are supplied by us as part of the calculator output. You do not need to source additional system materials separately.

How the System Works

This system improves floor sound insulation by combining mass and impact isolation:

  • Two layers of 5kg MLV add dense mass to help reduce airborne sound transmission, with staggered joints to minimise sound leakage at seams
  • 3mm Terrac Rubber Underlay reduces impact noise and improves acoustic comfort under floating floor finishes
  • AC95 Acoustic Sealant seals perimeter gaps and weak points to maintain airtightness
  • Jointing Tape seals MLV joints to prevent sound leakage at seams

What We Supply

The system calculator works out the estimated quantities required for all soundproofing materials we supply, including:

  • 5kg MLV (Soundproofing Mat) — 2 layers
  • 3mm Terrac Rubber Underlay
  • High Strength Contact Adhesive
  • AC95 Acoustic Sealant
  • PVC Jointing Tape

We also include an additional 5% allowance for waste in the calculated quantities.

Key Benefits

  • Practical entry-level upgrade for everyday noise and footfall — two layers of 5kg MLV combined with 3mm Terrac underlay provide a meaningful improvement in both airborne and impact noise without structural work
  • Dual 5kg MLV layers for added mass — two rolls of 5kg mass loaded vinyl with staggered joints add dense mass to help reduce everyday airborne noise including talking, TV, and general household noise
  • 3mm Terrac Rubber Underlay for impact isolation — installed above the MLV layers to reduce footfall and impact noise, and to provide a suitable acoustic substrate under loose lay LVT or floating floor finishes
  • Suitable for loose lay LVT and laminate/floating floors — the Terrac underlay provides a compatible acoustic base for loose lay LVT and laminate installations without requiring adhesive bonding
  • DIY-friendly installation — no structural work required; the system is laid over the existing floorboards and finished with the chosen floor covering
  • Slim build-up depth — approximately 10mm overall, making it one of the slimmest options in the range and suitable for most rooms without door or threshold issues
  • Built-in 5% waste allowance — calculator quantities include a 5% overage to reduce the risk of under-ordering on site

Important Notes

  • This system is designed for timber floors intended to be finished with loose lay LVT or laminate/floating floor products
  • It is intended to improve both airborne noise and impact noise, but results will vary depending on the existing floor construction
  • Sealant quantities are an approximation only and should be treated as a guide
  • The calculator is provided as a guide only, and final quantities should always be checked before ordering
  • Always follow the flooring manufacturer’s guidance for underlay requirements and expansion gaps

Installation Summary

Installation involves:

  1. Preparing the floor surface so it is clean, dry, and free from debris
  2. Installing the first layer of 5kg MLV
  3. Installing the second layer of 5kg MLV, staggering joints where possible
  4. Sealing joints as required and applying Jointing Tape
  5. Sealing perimeter gaps with AC95 Acoustic Sealant where required
  6. Installing 3mm Terrac underlay ready for the final loose lay / floating floor finish
