Higher Performance Sound Reduction for Stud Party Walls

Our Plus Stud Wall Soundproofing System is designed for reducing more noticeable airborne noise through existing plastered stud walls, where everyday solutions aren't quite enough. Using two layers of 10kg MLV and two layers of 15mm Acoustic Plasterboard bonded directly to the wall, it provides a higher-mass upgrade for improved sound reduction.

To make things easier, our online calculator works out the quantities required for your project, with an additional 5% already allowed for waste.

Designed for Louder Airborne Noise Through Stud Walls

This Plus system is a step up from our Essential tier and is intended for situations where you're dealing with louder airborne noise through a timber stud separating wall — louder voices, TV at higher volume, or more noticeable general neighbour noise.

The build-up consists of:

  • First layer of 10kg MLV (Soundproofing Mat) bonded to the existing wall
  • Second layer of 10kg MLV, joints staggered
  • First layer of 15mm Acoustic Plasterboard, leaving a small perimeter gap
  • AC95 Acoustic Sealant at perimeter
  • Second layer of 15mm Acoustic Plasterboard, joints staggered
  • Final perimeter seal with AC95 Acoustic Sealant
  • PVC Jointing Tape at MLV joints
  • High Strength Contact Adhesive throughout

The finished build-up is approximately 45mm overall from the existing wall face.

How the System Works

This system improves sound insulation by adding high-mass soundproofing materials directly to the wall surface:

  • Two layers of 10kg MLV add significantly more mass than standard matting, helping reduce louder airborne noise, with staggered joints to minimise sound leakage at seams
  • Two layers of 15mm Acoustic Plasterboard further increase mass and improve overall sound reduction, with staggered joints and a finish-ready surface
  • AC95 Acoustic Sealant seals perimeter gaps and weak points to maintain airtightness
  • Jointing Tape seals MLV joints to prevent sound leakage at seams

Installation Summary 

Installation involves:

  1. Preparing the wall so it is clean, dry, sound, and free from defects
  2. Bonding the first layer of 10kg MLV directly to the wall using contact adhesive
  3. Sealing joints as required and applying Jointing Tape
  4. Installing the second layer of 10kg MLV, staggering joints where possible
  5. Installing the first layer of 15mm Acoustic Plasterboard (maintaining a small perimeter gap)
  6. Sealing perimeter gaps with AC95 Acoustic Sealant
  7. Installing the second layer of 15mm Acoustic Plasterboard, staggering joints where possible
  8. Applying a final perimeter seal before finishing
  9. The completed wall can then be skimmed or tape and jointed ready for decoration.
