10kg Mass Loaded Vinyl Soundproofing Mat | 10kg/m² | 1.2m x 2m
Mass Loaded Vinyl is a mineral-loaded, high-density membrane that blocks airborne sound transmission by adding mass to a structure. Its mass and flexibility interrupt the path sound takes through walls, floors, and ceilings, reducing what passes through to the other side. At 10kg/m², this is double the density of the standard 5kg/m² MLV mat — the additional mass delivers measurably higher performance at all frequencies, with the most significant improvement at low frequencies where standard MLV is least effective.
This 10kg/m² MLV is manufactured from recycled mineral materials, delivering equivalent density and acoustic performance to virgin alternatives with a lower environmental footprint. At 5.2mm nominal thickness it adds slightly more build-up than the 5kg version but remains one of the thinner options available at this density. Each sheet covers 2.4m² and weighs 24kg. A single layer used as a free-hanging curtain provides 29dB of airborne sound insulation.
Applications
- Stud walls and timber partitions — for maximum performance in a lightweight stud wall, sandwich one layer of MLV between two sheets of acoustic plasterboard. The MLV layer increases the surface mass of the wall assembly, requiring significantly more energy to set the structure into vibration and transmit sound through it. The 10kg/m² version is particularly effective in partition walls where the 5kg/m² mat has been insufficient, or where the noise source is loud enough — music, machinery, or amplified audio — that the standard density cannot achieve the required reduction.
- Timber floors — secure all existing floorboards to eliminate movement and squeaking before installation. Apply Green Glue Noiseproofing Joist Tape to the joists, seal the perimeter and all joints with acoustic sealant, then bond the MLV to the timber floor using High Strength Contact Adhesive. At 10kg/m², the additional mass provides greater resistance to low-frequency noise transmitting through the floor structure from below.
- Ceilings — install as a barrier layer within a ceiling build-up, positioned between the existing ceiling substrate and a new plasterboard finish layer. For suspended ceiling applications, use as a free-hanging barrier above the ceiling tiles to reduce flanking paths. The higher density is appropriate where low-frequency noise — bass music, mechanical plant, or HVAC — is the primary concern.
- Fitness studios, gyms, and PT rooms — party walls, ceilings, and partition walls between workout zones where loud music, amplified audio, and vocal noise must be contained. MLV adds mass without significant build-up thickness, making it suitable for installation behind plasterboard in existing stud walls or above suspended ceilings where access is limited. For impact noise from weights and equipment on floors, see the Terrac Rubber Underlay range.
- Walls and ceilings — free-hanging — in plant rooms, server rooms, and commercial spaces where a permanent installation is not required, MLV can be hung freely from fixings to create a sound barrier without structural modification.
Product Benefits
- 10kg/m² density — double the mass of standard MLV. At twice the density of the 5kg/m² mat, this version delivers higher sound reduction at every frequency. The improvement is most pronounced at low frequencies — at 100Hz, the 10kg/m² mat measures 20dB compared to 10dB for the 5kg/m² version. Low-frequency noise is the hardest to block and where standard MLV installations most commonly fall short.
- 29dB single layer curtain performance. A single free-hanging layer delivers 29dB of airborne sound insulation — 5dB more than the standard 5kg/m² mat. Each 3dB improvement represents approximately 50% reduction in perceived noise level, making the additional density a meaningful upgrade for high-intensity noise sources.
- 5.2mm nominal thickness. Despite delivering significantly higher acoustic performance than the 5kg/m² mat, the 10kg/m² version adds only 2.6mm more to the build-up. This makes it a practical choice for applications where space is limited but the standard density is insufficient.
- Manufactured from recycled materials. Produced using recycled mineral content, meeting FMVSS 302 flammability requirements. Dimensional stability of 2% at 100°C over four hours ensures the material maintains its form and acoustic properties in warm or variable temperature environments.
- Flexible and cuttable on site. The MLV can be cut with a sharp knife or scissors and shaped to fit around obstacles, penetrations, and irregular surfaces. No specialist tools required.
Installation
For bonded installations, prime all surfaces with High Strength Contact Adhesive before applying the MLV. Butt joins between sheets tightly and tape with acoustic sealant or MLV joining tape to maintain barrier continuity — any gaps in the membrane significantly reduce overall performance. For floor installations, ensure all floorboards are secure before laying the MLV layer. At 24kg per sheet, handling on ceilings and overhead applications will require two people.
