The Advanced Acoustics F.A.T. 10" is a 40mm open-cell polyurethane acoustic foam tile in a precision cut egg-crate profile, measuring 254mm × 254mm (10" × 10"). F.A.T. stands for Fundamental Acoustic Treatment — the egg-crate profile is one of the original and most widely recognised acoustic foam formats, characterised by the alternating peak-and-valley surface that gives the tile its distinctive appearance.
The tile achieves NRC 0.55 (Sound Absorption Class D), providing effective absorption across the mid and high frequency range. Each pack contains 54 tiles, covering 3.48m² (37.5sqft) of wall or ceiling surface. Absorption increases with frequency: 0.21 at 250Hz, 0.46 at 500Hz, 0.66 at 1kHz, 0.80 at 2kHz, and 1.08 at 4kHz. The 10" is the smallest tile size in the F.A.T. range, suited to installations where finer pattern detail or coverage of irregular wall areas is preferred. Available in Mid Grey. The 40mm egg-crate foam core achieves NRC 0.55 (Class D), with absorption increasing with frequency from 0.21 at 250Hz to 1.08 at 4kHz. The egg-crate profile achieves a slightly lower NRC than wedge profiles at the same nominal thickness — the void space between peaks means the average effective depth across the tile face is less than the 40mm peak measurement, which accounts for the difference in absorption performance relative to a continuous wedge cut of the same height. The acoustic performance is consistent across all three tile sizes in the F.A.T. range; tile size selection is determined by the preferred installation pattern scale and wall area.

The egg-crate profile — peaks and valleys alternating across the tile face — is the original acoustic foam tile format and one of the most recognisable shapes in studio acoustic treatment. Each tile is cut to consistent peak height and valley depth across every tile in the pack, producing a uniform appearance across the installed surface.

Installation
Plan the tile layout before beginning installation. Sketch the intended pattern on paper and mark the layout on the wall or ceiling surface using pencil, masking tape, or a laser level. Due to the geometry of the egg-crate profile, leaving a small, consistent gap between each tile produces the best visual result — the gap defines the tile edges and prevents the peaks of adjacent tiles from compressing against each other during installation. Distribute tiles evenly across the treatment area rather than concentrating them in a single large cluster; even distribution provides more consistent absorption coverage across the room.
Apply Advanced Acoustics Contact Adhesive to both the back of the tile and the mounting surface. Apply a band of adhesive around the perimeter of the tile and 50–75% coverage of the remaining surface area; repeat the equivalent coverage on the wall. Allow the adhesive to become touch-dry before bringing the surfaces together — contact adhesive bonds on contact, so position the tile carefully before pressing it to the wall. Avoid overspray onto the tile face or surrounding wall surface; use masking tape on the wall to protect adjacent areas. If adhesive webbing contacts the tile face, allow it to dry fully before attempting to remove it — in most cases it can be peeled away cleanly once dry. The adhesive is solvent-based. Ensure adequate ventilation throughout the installation — keep doors and windows open.
For a temporary or demountable installation, mount tiles onto 6mm MDF or plywood sheet to create panels, then hang the panels using D-rings and picture hooks. For ceiling-mounted panels, use four mirror plates per panel. This approach allows panels to be removed and repositioned without damage to the wall or ceiling surface.
