Green Glue Noiseproofing Joist Tape | 75mm × 3.2mm | 30m Roll

Green Glue Noiseproofing Joist Tape is a self-adhesive foam tape applied to the top of timber joists before the subfloor is laid. It decouples the subfloor from the joist structure, preventing direct contact between the two surfaces. This decoupling eliminates the primary cause of floor squeaking — timber-on-timber friction as joists and boards move relative to each other — and reduces the transmission of impact noise through the floor assembly.

At 75mm wide and 3.2mm thick, the tape covers the full bearing surface of a standard joist and adds negligible build-up to the floor assembly. Each roll provides 30 linear metres of coverage.

Applications
  • Timber joisted floors — squeak prevention — apply to the top of each joist before laying the subfloor. The tape prevents direct contact between the subfloor and joist, eliminating squeaking caused by movement and settlement. Suitable for new build and renovation projects where timber joists are accessible prior to subfloor installation.
  • Timber joisted floors — impact noise reduction — used as part of a floor soundproofing assembly to decouple the floor structure and reduce the transmission of impact noise. For improved sound isolation, STS TG4 acoustic floorboards and a layer of Mass Loaded Vinyl can be incorporated into the build-up above the joist tape for additional mass and decoupling performance.
Product Benefits
  • Eliminates floor squeaking. By decoupling the subfloor from the joist, the tape prevents the timber-on-timber contact that causes squeaking as floors settle and joists move. Effective in both new build and renovation applications where joists are accessible.
  • Self-adhesive — no fixings required. The tape is applied adhesive-side down directly to the top of each joist. No additional adhesive or mechanical fixings are needed for installation.
  • 3.2mm thickness — negligible build-up. The tape adds 3.2mm to the top of each joist, which does not meaningfully affect finished floor heights in standard construction.
  • 30m per roll. Each roll covers 30 linear metres of joist, sufficient for a typical room in a single roll depending on joist spacing.
Installation

Ensure joist surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dust, dirt, and moisture before application. Apply the tape adhesive-side down evenly along the top of each joist. Once all joists are taped, lay the subfloor as normal. Do not use construction adhesives to secure the subfloor — adhesive bonding between subfloor and joist will compromise the decoupling effect of the tape.

Frequently Asked Questions

My floor creaks in specific spots — will joist tape fix it?

Joist tape eliminates squeaking caused by direct timber-on-timber contact between the subfloor and joists. If the creak originates at that interface, the tape will fix it. If the creak comes from floorboard-to-floorboard movement, loose fixings, or other contact points in the floor assembly, the tape will not address those. The tape must be applied before the subfloor is laid — it cannot be retrofitted to an existing floor without removing the boards first.

Can it be used on I-beam or engineered joists?

Yes. Apply the tape to the top flange of the I-beam or engineered joist as you would a solid timber joist. Use the 75mm width for wider flanges to ensure full bearing surface coverage without gaps.

Does joist tape provide meaningful soundproofing on its own?

Joist tape decouples the subfloor from the joist at the contact point — a useful contribution to overall floor acoustic performance, but not a complete soundproofing solution. For meaningful impact and airborne noise reduction, it works as part of a complete assembly alongside STS TG4 acoustic boards and Mass Loaded Vinyl. As a standalone measure, expect squeak elimination and a modest contribution to reducing impact noise.

Will decoupling the subfloor from the joists affect structural integrity?

No. The tape decouples the surfaces but mechanical fixings — screws or nails — still connect subfloor to joist through the tape. Structural integrity is fully maintained. Do not replace mechanical fixings with adhesive — the fixings are required regardless of whether tape is used.

What if the squeaking returns after installation?

All products carry a 30-day money-back guarantee. If squeaking persists after correct installation, the source may be at a different contact point in the assembly — floorboard-to-floorboard movement or loose fixings rather than the joist-to-subfloor interface. Contact us and we will help identify the source.

  • Make sure all surfaces are free from dirt, ice and water before applying the Noiseproofing Joist Tape.
  • Apply the Noiseproofing Joist Tape - adhesive side down - evenly to the top of each floor joist.
  • Once placement of the Noiseproofing Joist Tape is complete, apply the sub-floor as normal to joists.
  • Please note: the use of construction adhesives is NOT recommended when securing the sub-floor and will compromise the effectiveness of the Noiseproofing Joist Tape.
  • Do not install material of unacceptable quality.
