Acoustic Fencing
How Acoustic Fencing Works
Standard decorative fence panels are designed for privacy and aesthetics, not noise control. Their lightweight construction and the gaps that develop between boards over time allow sound to pass through with minimal resistance. Acoustic fencing works differently — it uses mass, thickness, and gap-free construction to reflect airborne sound rather than allowing it to transmit through the barrier.
The SilentFence panel uses 45mm thick interlocking tongue-and-groove boards set into a rebated frame. The rebated frame prevents gaps from opening across the face of the panel as the timber moves seasonally — the primary failure point of standard fence panels when used for noise control. The result is a continuous, dense barrier that reflects traffic noise, machinery noise, and neighbour noise before it reaches your outdoor space.
Understanding the Performance Data
The SilentFence panel is independently laboratory tested to BS EN ISO 10140-2:2010 in accordance with BS EN 1793-2 and BS EN ISO 717-1, achieving between 25dB and 34dB of airborne sound reduction. These are verified laboratory figures, not marketing estimates.
As a rule of thumb, each 3dB improvement in noise reduction represents approximately 50% reduction in perceived noise intensity. A 10dB reduction is perceived as roughly half as loud. A 25–34dB reduction represents a substantial and clearly audible improvement in the acoustic environment of an outdoor space — equivalent to reducing a busy road to background level noise in many residential applications.
Installation Guidance
For optimum acoustic performance, the panels must be installed without gaps — at the post junction, at the base of the run, and between panels. Use slotted fence posts (timber or concrete) or screw the panel directly to the post. Do not use U-brackets, which leave a gap at the post junction that significantly reduces acoustic performance. Mount panels on gravel boards to bring the total fence height above 2 metres where maximum noise reduction is required. Include the matching SilentFence gate to maintain acoustic continuity across any access points in the fence run.
Delivery & Lead Time
SilentFence panels and gates are made to order with an approximate 2-week lead time. Products are delivered directly to you by our manufacturing partner. Minimum order of 3 panels.
