Reduce Everyday Airborne Noise Through Timber Ceilings

Our Essential Timber Ceiling Soundproofing System is a straightforward upgrade designed to reduce everyday airborne noise through timber ceilings — such as general talking and TV noise. This system uses two layers of 5kg MLV to add mass, combined with two layers of 15mm acoustic plasterboard to further improve sound reduction.

To make things easier, our online calculator works out the quantities required for your project, with an additional 5% already allowed for waste.

Designed for Timber Ceilings

Timber ceilings can allow airborne sound to pass through more easily than solid constructions. Our Essential Timber Ceiling Soundproofing System is a practical, cost-effective upgrade for reducing speech and general household noise. The build-up consists of:

  • 2 layers of 5kg MLV (Soundproofing Mat)
  • 2 layers of 15mm Knauff Soundshield Acoustic Plasterboard
  • Everbuild AC95 Acoustic Sealant
  • PVC Jointing Tape
  • Heavy Duty Contact Adhesive

The finished build-up is approximately 35mm overall.

Important Supply Information

All components required for this system are supplied by us as part of the calculator output. The only items you need to source separately are suitable fixings for your ceiling type.

How the System Works

This system improves ceiling sound insulation primarily by adding mass and improving airtightness:

  • MLV adds dense mass to help reduce airborne sound transmission through the ceiling structure
  • Two layers of 15mm acoustic plasterboard add further surface mass, improving sound reduction compared to a single layer
  • Jointing Tape and AC95 Acoustic Sealant reduce sound leakage through gaps and perimeter junctions

What We Supply

  • 2 layers of 5kg MLV (Soundproofing Mat)
  • 2 layers of 15mm Knauff Soundshield Acoustic Plasterboard
  • AC95 Acoustic Sealant
  • PVC Jointing Tape
  • Contact Adhesive

Fixings are not included — source these to suit your ceiling type. We also include an additional 5% allowance for waste in the calculated quantities.

Key Benefits

  • High mass build-up for airborne noise reduction — two layers of 5kg/m² MLV combined with two layers of 15mm Knauff Soundshield acoustic plasterboard add significant surface mass, reducing the transmission of everyday airborne noise including speech and TV
  • Cost-effective ceiling soundproofing for timber construction — designed as a practical upgrade for timber joist ceilings where the primary issue is speech, TV noise, or general household sound at normal levels
  • No structural work required — the system overboards the existing ceiling surface, making it achievable without removing the existing ceiling or altering the structure above
  • Complete system supply — all components are included in the calculator output, so you can order everything needed for your ceiling soundproofing project in one place
  • Built-in 5% waste allowance — calculator quantities include a 5% overage to account for cuts and waste, reducing the risk of under-ordering on site
  • Competent DIY achievable — a full installation guide is available covering MLV layering, plasterboard fixing sequence, joint staggering, and airtightness sealing

Important Notes

  • This system is designed primarily for airborne noise (speech/TV).
  • If the issue is heavy impact noise from above, a different approach may be required.
  • Results will vary depending on the existing ceiling construction, joist spacing, void depth, and flanking paths
  • Sealant quantities are an approximation only and should be treated as a guide
  • The calculator is provided as a guide only, and final quantities should always be checked before ordering

Installation Summary

  • Ensure the existing ceiling surface is sound and suitable for overboarding
  • Install first layer of 5kg MLV
  • Install first layer of 15mm acoustic plasterboard
  • Install second layer of 5kg MLV, staggering joints where possible
  • Apply contact adhesive as required during installation
  • Install second layer of 15mm acoustic plasterboard, staggering joints
  • Seal perimeter gaps with AC95 and tape joints as required
