High Performance Ceiling Soundproofing for Loud Noise and Music

Our Pro Ceiling Soundproofing System – Timber or Concrete is our highest performance ceiling build-up for situations where you’re dealing with loud airborne noise, including music and bass, and want a serious upgrade. This system uses MuteClip and MuteClip Channel to decouple the new ceiling from the structure, combined with 10kg MLV and two layers of 15mm acoustic plasterboard to add mass and improve sound reduction.

To make things easier, our online calculator works out the quantities required for your project, with an additional 5% already allowed for waste.

Designed for Timber or Concrete Ceilings

This Pro system is designed for customers who need more than “add mass and overboard” solutions can typically deliver. The key difference is decoupling: the MuteClip system creates a resilient connection that helps reduce vibration transfer into the new ceiling.

The build-up consists of:

  • MuteClip
  • MuteClip Channel
  • 10kg MLV (Soundproofing Mat)
  • 15mm Knauff Soundshield Acoustic Plasterboard
  • Everbuild AC95 Acoustic Sealant

The finished build-up is approximately 80mm overall.

Important Supply Information

All components required for this system are supplied by us, including the acoustic plasterboard. The only items you need to source separately are suitable fixings for your ceiling type.

How the System Works

This system improves ceiling sound insulation using three key mechanisms:

  • Decoupling using MuteClip & MuteClip Channel: reduces vibration transfer from the existing ceiling/structure into the new ceiling
  • Adding mass using 10kg MLV & 15mm Acoustic Plasterboard: dense layers help reduce airborne sound transmission, including louder noise
  • Airtightness with Acoustic Sealant & Jointing Tape: reduces sound leakage at edges and joints

What We Supply

  • MuteClip and MuteClip Channel
  • 1 layer of 10kg MLV (Soundproofing Mat)
  • 2 layers of 15mm Knauff Soundshield Acoustic Plasterboard
  • AC95 Acoustic Sealant
  • Jointing Tape
  • Contact Adhesive

Fixings are not included. We also include an additional 5% allowance for waste in the calculated quantities.

Key Benefits

  • Decoupled ceiling system — MuteClip isolation clips and channel create a resilient connection that reduces vibration transfer from the existing structure into the new ceiling, improving airborne sound insulation performance
  • High mass build-up — 10kg/m² MLV combined with two layers of 15mm Knauff Soundshield acoustic plasterboard adds significant surface mass, reducing the transmission of loud airborne noise including music, bass, and impact sound
  • Suitable for timber joists and concrete soffits — the system is designed to work with both construction types, making it applicable to flats, houses, and commercial spaces
  • Complete system supply — all components are included in the calculator output except fixings, so you can order everything needed for your ceiling soundproofing project in one place
  • Built-in 5% waste allowance — calculator quantities include a 5% overage to account for cuts and waste, reducing the risk of under-ordering on site
  • Competent DIY achievable — a full installation guide is available, covering clip spacing, channel layout, plasterboard fixing sequence, and airtightness sealing

Important Notes

  • This is an experienced DIY system.
  • Correct clip spacing, channel layout, and fixing selection matter for performance.
  • Results will vary depending on the existing ceiling construction, joist spacing, void depth, and flanking paths (walls, floors, services).
  • Sealant quantities are an approximation only and should be treated as a guide.
  • The calculator is provided as a guide only, and final quantities should always be checked before ordering.
  • If there are recessed lights, services, or penetrations, these can significantly reduce performance unless treated correctly.

Installation Summary

  • Set out battens (if required) and fix to concrete using anchor bolts (concrete ceilings only)
  • Fix MuteClips to joists or battens using 5mm x 60mm coarse thread wood screws
  • Install MuteClip Channels and secure overlaps using 20mm steel self-tapping screws
  • Fix the first layer of 15mm acoustic plasterboard to channels using 32mm fine thread drywall screws
  • Install 10kg MLV as part of the ceiling build-up
  • Fix the second layer of 15mm acoustic plasterboard using 50mm fine thread drywall screws
  • Tape joints and seal perimeter gaps with AC95 for airtightness
