Maximum Timber Floor Upgrade for Loud Noise and Music (Loose Lay / Floating Finish)

Our Pro Timber Floor Soundproofing System – Loose Lay LVT & Laminate is our highest performance timber floor build-up for situations where you're dealing with loud noise, music, or persistent impact noise and need a more serious upgrade. This system improves performance by upgrading the structural deck using 22mm STS TG4 and adding decoupling and damping at the joists with Green Glue Joist Tape, before finishing with two layers of 5kg MLV and a floating-floor-ready acoustic layer using 5mm Terrac Rubber Underlayment.

To make things easier, our online calculator works out the quantities required for your project, with an additional 5% already allowed for waste.

Designed for Loud Noise & Music Through Timber Floors (Loose Lay / Floating Finish)

This Pro system is designed for timber floors where you need a higher level of sound reduction than mat and underlay systems can typically provide — particularly for loud airborne noise such as music, bass, TV at higher volume, and persistent impact noise. This is an advanced DIY system as it involves lifting the existing floorboards and installing a new structural deck.

The build-up consists of:

  • Existing floorboards removed
  • Green Glue Joist Tape applied to joists
  • 22mm STS TG4 Acoustic Floorboard (fixed with 50mm screws and PU Adhesive)
  • 2 layers of 5kg MLV (Soundproofing Mat), joints staggered
  • 5mm Terrac Rubber Underlayment
  • Everbuild AC95 Acoustic Sealant
  • Jointing Tape
  • Contact Adhesive

The finished build-up is approximately 40mm overall above the joists.

Important Supply Information

All components required for this system are supplied by us as part of the calculator output. The only items you need to source separately are suitable fixings beyond those included and the finished floor itself.

How the System Works

This system improves floor sound insulation using multiple mechanisms:

  • Green Glue Joist Tape reduces vibration transfer at the joists — a common weak point in timber floors — by decoupling the new deck from the joist structure
  • 22mm STS TG4 Acoustic Floorboard adds stiffness and mass to the structural deck, improving the base performance before acoustic layers are added
  • 2 layers of 5kg MLV add dense mass to help reduce airborne sound transmission, with staggered joints to minimise sound leakage at seams
  • 5mm Terrac Rubber Underlayment helps reduce impact noise and improves acoustic comfort directly under the loose lay LVT or laminate finish
  • AC95 Acoustic Sealant and Jointing Tape reduce sound leakage through perimeter gaps and board joints

What We Supply

The system calculator works out the estimated quantities required for all soundproofing materials we supply, including:

  • 50mm Green Glue Joist Tape
  • 22mm STS TG4 Acoustic Floorboards
  • 50mm STS Cement Board Screws
  • STS Slow Set PU Adhesive
  • 5kg MLV (Soundproofing Mat) — 2 layers
  • 5mm Terrac Rubber Underlayment
  • High Strength Contact Adhesive
  • AC95 Acoustic Sealant
  • PVC Jointing Tape

We also include an additional 5% allowance for waste in the calculated quantities.

Key Benefits

  • Highest performance timber floor option for loud noise and music — Green Glue Joist Tape, dual MLV layers, and 5mm Terrac combine to deliver significantly better airborne and impact noise reduction than standard mat and underlay systems
  • Joist-level decoupling with Green Glue Joist Tape — applied directly to the joists before the new deck is installed, reducing vibration transfer at the structural level — a common weak point in timber floors
  • 22mm STS TG4 structural deck — heavier and stiffer than the 18mm Essential board, providing a more solid base for the acoustic layers above and improving overall mass and rigidity
  • 2 layers of 5kg MLV — double mass loaded vinyl with staggered joints adds dense mass to help reduce airborne sound transmission, including bass-heavy noise and music
  • 5mm Terrac Rubber Underlayment — thicker than the Essential system, providing improved impact isolation and acoustic comfort directly under the loose lay LVT or laminate finish
  • Suitable for loose lay LVT and laminate / floating floors — the 5mm Terrac layer provides a suitable acoustic substrate directly under the finished floor
  • Advanced DIY system — requires lifting existing floorboards; suitable for competent DIYers or tradespeople comfortable with structural floor work
  • Built-in 5% waste allowance — calculator quantities include a 5% overage to account for cuts and waste, reducing the risk of under-ordering on site

Important Notes

  • This is an advanced DIY system and involves removing existing floorboards
  • Results will vary depending on joist spacing, void depth, existing ceiling below, and flanking paths
  • Sealant quantities are an approximation only and should be treated as a guide
  • The calculator is provided as a guide only, and final quantities should always be checked before ordering
  • Always follow the flooring manufacturer's guidance for underlay requirements and expansion gaps
  • If the floor below is a sensitive area, consider addressing the ceiling below as well for best results

Installation Summary

  1. Lift and remove existing floorboards
  2. Apply Green Glue Joist Tape to joists
  3. Install 22mm STS TG4 using 50mm cement board screws and PU Adhesive
  4. Install first layer of 5kg MLV
  5. Install second layer of 5kg MLV, staggering joints where possible
  6. Tape joints and seal perimeter gaps with AC95 Acoustic Sealant
  7. Install 5mm Terrac Rubber Underlayment
