Advanced Acoustics Resilient Tape | EPDM Foam Rubber | Self-Adhesive | 5mm & 10mm

Resilient tape is a self-adhesive EPDM foam rubber strip used to decouple structural elements from one another — isolating the point of contact between a timber stud and a concrete floor, or between a wall plate and a masonry wall, to prevent vibration and structure-borne sound from transferring directly through the junction.

Where two rigid surfaces are in hard contact, structure-borne sound passes freely through that connection regardless of the acoustic performance of the materials on either side of it. Introducing a resilient layer at the junction breaks that rigid contact, forcing sound energy to pass through a compressible material that absorbs vibration rather than transmitting it.

EPDM foam rubber is used for this application because it maintains its resilience and compression recovery over the long term. The <5% compression set after 22 hours at 25% compression confirms the material returns to its original thickness after loading — a critical property for a tape that will be permanently loaded by the weight of a stud wall. EPDM is also age-resistant and chemically neutral against common lacquers, plastics, ozone, and UV radiation, ensuring performance is maintained throughout the life of the structure.

Available in 5mm and 10mm thickness and four widths — 25mm, 50mm, 75mm, and 100mm — all supplied on 10m rolls.

Applications

  • Isolated stud wall construction — apply along the underside of the bottom plate before fixing the stud to the floor, and along the back face of the stud where it meets the surrounding walls and ceiling. The tape prevents direct rigid contact between the stud frame and the structure at every junction point, reducing the flanking path through which structure-borne sound bypasses the acoustic build-up of the wall itself. Width selection should match the stud or plate width — 75mm or 100mm for standard timber studwork.
  • Resilient bar installations — used alongside resilient bars or acoustic clips to seal the junction between the wall frame and the surrounding structure. While resilient bars decouple the plasterboard from the stud, flanking sound can still transmit through the rigid connections at the floor and ceiling perimeter. Resilient tape at these junctions closes the flanking path that would otherwise limit the performance of the resilient bar system.
  • Structural decoupling at floor and ceiling perimeters — applied where a floating floor or ceiling build-up meets a wall, to prevent rigid contact between the floating element and the perimeter structure. Maintaining the acoustic isolation of a floating floor or ceiling at its perimeter is critical — a single rigid connection at the edge significantly reduces overall performance.

NOTE: Resilient tape reduces structure-borne sound transmission only when used as part of a complete soundproofing system. It does not provide meaningful acoustic isolation when used in isolation on a standard non-isolated construction.

Product Benefits

  • EPDM foam rubber — permanent resilience. EPDM maintains its elastic properties and compression recovery over decades, unlike foam rubbers that harden, crack, or take permanent set under sustained load. Compression set of <5% after 22 hours at 25% compression confirms the material recovers its original thickness after loading, preserving the isolation gap at every junction for the life of the structure.
  • Self-adhesive backing — no separate fixings. The self-adhesive backing holds the tape in position during installation, keeping it aligned on the stud or plate before the stud is fixed to the structure. No additional adhesive, clips, or staples required.
  • Four widths — 25mm to 100mm. Width options cover applications from narrow resilient bar fixing points at 25mm to full-width stud and plate coverage at 75mm and 100mm.
  • Two thickness options — 5mm and 10mm. Thickness selection is determined by the degree of isolation required and the allowable build-up at junctions. 10mm provides greater compression depth and a more resilient isolation layer for heavier stud walls or applications where a higher degree of decoupling is specified.
  • Chemical and environmental resistance. EPDM is resistant to ozone, UV radiation, moisture, and caustic chemicals — suitable for installation in subfloor voids, plant rooms, and other environments where standard foams would degrade. Water absorption of <2% (ASTM D1056) confirms the material does not absorb moisture and swell at junctions.
  • Temperature range: -30°C to +90°C continuous. Maintains its resilience and dimensional stability across the full temperature range encountered in UK construction, including underfloor heating installations.

Installation

Select the width to match the stud or plate profile being isolated. Peel back the release liner and apply the tape to the underside of the bottom plate and the back face of any studs that will contact surrounding walls, floors, or ceilings before fixing the frame into position. Press firmly to ensure full adhesive contact. Where two lengths of tape meet, butt the joins tightly — any gap in the resilient layer creates a rigid contact point that bypasses the isolation. Fix the stud frame to the structure through the tape in the normal way; the tape compresses under the fixing load and continues to provide resilient isolation at the contact face.
