SilentBarrier5 Self-Adhesive Noise Control Barrier | 5kg/m² | 1.25m x 3m

SilentBarrier5 is a TPO polymer-based mass loaded barrier that blocks airborne sound transmission by adding mass to a surface. Like all mass-based barriers, it works by interrupting the path sound takes through a structure — the greater the mass per unit area, the greater the resistance to sound passing through. The self-adhesive backing eliminates the need for separate contact adhesive during installation, making it particularly suited to ductwork wrapping and ceiling applications where handling a limp barrier and applying adhesive simultaneously is impractical.

At 5kg/m² and 2.5mm nominal thickness, SilentBarrier5 matches the density of our standard MLV mat. The key differences are the TPO polymer construction — which gives a softer, more pliable sheet (60 Shore A vs 76 Shore A) — the tan colour, and the factory-applied self-adhesive backing. Where the standard MLV requires contact adhesive for bonded installations, SilentBarrier5 is peel-and-stick, reducing installation time and eliminating the need for a separate adhesive product.

Applications

  • Stud walls and timber partitions — peel back the release liner and apply directly to the face of the stud, plasterboard, or masonry. The self-adhesive backing holds the sheet in position during installation, which is particularly useful on vertical surfaces where a limp barrier sheet would otherwise need supporting while adhesive cures. Board over with acoustic plasterboard to complete the build-up.
  • Ductwork and pipe wrapping — the primary advantage of the self-adhesive format. Wrap SilentBarrier5 around HVAC ductwork, soil pipes, and service runs to reduce radiated noise and resonance. The pliable TPO construction conforms to curved surfaces and the adhesive backing bonds directly to sheet metal without additional fixings or tape. Overlap each wrap pass by 50mm and press firmly to the substrate for full adhesion.
  • Ceilings — install as a barrier layer between the existing ceiling substrate and a new plasterboard finish. The self-adhesive backing simplifies overhead installation — the sheet adheres on contact and holds in position while fixings are applied, eliminating the need for a second person to support the material.
  • Walls and ceilings — free-hanging — in plant rooms and commercial spaces where a permanent bonded installation is not required, SilentBarrier5 can be hung freely from fixings. The tan colour should be taken into account if the barrier will remain exposed.

Product Benefits

  • 5kg/m² density — equivalent acoustic mass to lead. MLV and TPO barrier performance is determined by mass per unit area. At 5kg/m², SilentBarrier5 delivers the same acoustic mass as the standard MLV mat — the self-adhesive format does not compromise the density or the barrier performance of the sheet.
  • Self-adhesive backing — no separate adhesive required. The factory-applied peel-and-stick backing removes the need for contact adhesive, reduces installation time, and eliminates adhesive waste and fumes on site. Particularly advantageous for ductwork wrapping and ceiling applications where working with a separate adhesive is difficult.
  • Softer, more pliable construction. At 60 Shore A hardness, SilentBarrier5 is more flexible than the standard 76 Shore A MLV mat. This allows it to conform more easily to curved surfaces, irregular profiles, and ductwork of varying diameters without creasing or losing contact with the substrate.
  • 2.5mm nominal thickness. At under 3mm, SilentBarrier5 adds negligible build-up to walls, ceilings, and wrapped services. Suitable for applications where floor-to-ceiling height or duct clearance must be maintained.

Installation

Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dust or grease before application — adhesive bond strength is significantly reduced on contaminated surfaces. Peel back the release liner progressively as you apply the sheet, pressing firmly to the substrate as you go. For ductwork applications, overlap each pass by a minimum of 50mm and press seams firmly. For wall and ceiling applications, supplement the adhesive bond with mechanical fixings on larger sheets.
